Hundreds of people are fleeing coastal areas of northern New Zealand after a magnitude 8.1 earthquake struck offshore and a tsunami warning was issued across the Pacific.
The New Zealand media reported. Three earthquakes were recorded: the first of magnitude 6.9, a second very offshore of 7.1 and a third of 8.1. In the area, about 1.000 km from the coast of New Zealand, other violent tremors were recorded in sequence, the last of 6.1.
The Tsunami warning also concerns much of the Pacific Ocean after the earthquake of magnitude 8.1 off the Kermadec Islands region at a depth of 6 miles. According to the Tsunami Center of the United States, the coasts of Ecuador, Colombia, Fiji, the Cook Islands, Pohnpei, the Pitcairn Islands, Wallis and Futuna, Samoa, the Solomon Islands, French Polynesia, Costa Rica, Vanuatu, Nicaragua, Panama, Mexico, Antarctica, Nauru, Australia, Chile, Peru, Hawaii could be affected.
