Forestry Carabinieri Save a Barn Owl in the Province of Salerno
The soldiers of the Station Forestry Carabinieri of Mercato San Severino, during a patrol service in wooded areas aimed at protecting wildlife, they went to the “Cerrelle” area of the municipality of Mercato San Severino.
The soldiers, while walking along a path that leads to the innermost part of the forest, were alerted by some noises coming from the upper part of the slope they were patrolling. As sunset approached, the soldiers continued to inspect the area using the torches provided.
The operating personnel were greatly surprised when, pointing the torch towards the exact point from which the noises were coming, they found themselves in front of an adult specimen of Barn Owl (Tyto alba) clearly having difficulty taking flight.
Trying not to scare and stress the bird of prey, the operating personnel slowly approached the animal and once they reached it they found that it had a broken leg.
The military then proceeded to collect the barn owl and give him first aid by splinting his injured leg. Then, they contacted the ENPA association for animal protection and organized a prompt transport to the “Frullone” recovery center in Naples.
The bird of prey was then handed over to the center's veterinary staff for treatment.
