Covid-19 and the Culture of Proximity: “A City That Writes… for Dante” begins

[Press release]

The Association “Una Città Che…” and the Giacomo Leopardi Social Library are launching the sixth edition of the Una Città Che Scrive Literary Award, which has gained a prominent role in the national cultural panorama over the years.

This is the year of the celebrations for the 700th anniversary of the death of Dante Alighieri and it is to these celebrations that the 2021 edition of the Una Città Che Scrive Literary Award is dedicated.

The literary competition will award, in fact, cash prizes and publication prizes for a “special section” dedicated to the great poet. The complete announcement can be found on the website www.unacittachescrive.it.

The winning texts will then be published in the anthology entitled “A City That Writes…for Dante”.

The anthology and awards will be presented during a review organized from May 28 to June 6, 2021.

Should Covid-19 restrictions still be in place, at the end of May the organization will evaluate the possibility of holding the awards evening and the entire literary event online (website, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube).

The event includes, in the indicated period (from May 28 to June 6, 2021), “Dante meetings”, with readings and comments on texts and works by the great poet.

Even in this case, the organizers would be ready to replace in-person meetings with digital initiatives.

“Already on March 25, 2021, on the occasion of Dantedì, we will publish online our reading of the first canto of the Inferno, by the actor Giorgio Pinto, on the digital images of the illustrated plates of the Divine Comedy by Gustave Dorè and Salvador Dalì. There are many initiatives around Italy. But with the Covid-19 restrictions, at least for now, we cannot move. Digital, the network and new technology can, however, break down these limits. As far as we are concerned, it is as if we were doing a first experiment in Proximity Culture”, declares Giovanni Nappi, founder of the Giacomo Leopardi Social Library.

The event is scheduled from May 28th to June 6th 2021

The itinerary is enriched with the exhibition “Florence, Verona, Ravenna. A stroll through Dante”.

The initial idea of creating 10 unpublished images, chosen from the photos to be taken while visiting the three cities of Dante, due to the pandemic, has given way to the exhibition of unpublished works created by Giuseppe Castiello, designer and illustrator. The artist, with his works, will pay homage to Florence, Verona, Ravenna and to the relationship that the three extraordinary cities have had with Dante Alighieri.

Also scheduled is an exhibition of works dedicated to Dante, created by sculptors and artists of the 900th century.

The exhibition is inspired by the wonderful intuition of the Dante Center of Ravenna, that is, the idea of organizing an “International Dante Biennial”, an international competition for medals and small bronze sculptures.

Works and medals on display:

Bronze bas-relief depicting Dante, signed Emilio Greco, accompanied by the publication in the catalogue of the “Rassegna di scultura dantesca contemporanea” in Ravenna in 1975, as an exemplar work, out of competition; the medal of the same work dated 1973, created by Emilio Greco, who was asked to create the official medal for the first edition of the event, is also exhibited;
WHICH DOVES ARE CALLED BY DESIRES (INF V-79) Bronze medal by Giacomo Manzù (1977 – Dante Centre of Ravenna);
SIX DOVES IN FLIGHT Bronze medal by Giacomo Manzù, created in 1983 to commemorate the sixth International Biennial of the Dante Medal in Ravenna;
28TH CENTENARY OF THE FIRST THREE EDITIONS OF THE DIVINE COMEDY FOLIGNO – JESI – MANTUA Bronze medal of Goffredo Verginelli (5-1972-XNUMX – Dante Centre of Ravenna);
“La Vita Nuova” by Dante illustrated by the master Pericle Fazzini. Published by Trec edizioni pregiate, 1984, in a limited edition and with the autograph signature of the master. The first edition of the “Biennale Internazionale Dantesca”, in 1973, was presided over by Pericle Fazzini himself.
Naturally, there will be some valuable editions of the Divine Comedy (illustrated plates by Salvador Dalí will be on display).

Hoping that the pandemic will pass, the Association “Una Città Che…” has already instructed its operators to create a virtual tour to present the works.
