A DELEGATION OF WORKERS OUTSIDE THE MERCADANTE THEATER – PRESS CONFERENCE AT 15.00:XNUMX PM

[Press release]

Faced with a year of total standstill in our sector, we decided that strong action was needed to shine a spotlight on our sector and the situation of workers.

We have chosen this place for its high symbolic visibility, because it is the most important public space in Campania dedicated to prose theater, and for the attention to workers' problems demonstrated by its director a few days ago in the interview in Repubblica on March 14, 2021. We immediately invite Roberto Andò and all the workers of the Teatro di Napoli to a public debate and to express their solidarity, as is happening in recent weeks in France and as also happened a few days ago at the Verdi theater in Padua.

The culture and entertainment sector is one that has been brought to its knees by the progress of the economic crisis triggered by the pandemic.

Theaters and cultural venues closed, events banned, job opportunities reduced to very few days which have had the sole effect of fueling a real war between the poor and the lowering of labor costs.

Thousands of workers in the sector across the country have been left without a salary for a year now, those who had no other income to rely on no longer had the means to support themselves and their families. The emergency economic interventions provided by means of DPCM have been completely inadequate to guarantee economic stability worthy of the name for everyone, clearly defining the class identity of those who are paying for this crisis.

While the contagion spread in hospitals, factories and warehouses, which never stopped production despite rushing to the resources made available by the government, no serious work was done on the development of safety protocols for places of culture and entertainment, establishing in the closure tout-court and without parachutes the only available medicine, as happened in schools.

The bonuses distributed with exclusionary and always downward criteria have been a mockery for all those who in twelve months have mortgaged years and years of work, compared to the millions and millions of euros literally given away to institutions, foundations, large cooperatives both in the form of FUS and Cassa Integrazione: a few weeks ago the news of the will, by the Fondazione Lirico Sinfonica San Carlo, to activate the cassa Integrazione for 320 people, after having received the entire amount of public funds allocated to it.

We do not believe that it is possible to continue on the path of hastily cobbled together emergency measures; on the contrary, we are convinced of the need for an immediate change of direction, towards the path that shows us the self-organization from below of workers in many sectors.

We believe it is our duty to relaunch with our gesture an unequivocal signal, which bounces loud and clear from the struggles of logistics and riders, to those of the unemployed and schools, from the occupations of university students and the academy to those of our French colleagues.

We express our utmost and active solidarity towards all these experiences, joining them. We do it to regain our dignity in work, without handouts; to reclaim spaces for discussion, without delegations; to build paths of struggle that are unavailable to compromise and determined to get back what has been systematically taken away from us for too long, namely continuous and uniform protections for all the professional figures present in our sector.

We invite all sectors fighting tomorrow, March 26, the day of national mobilization of riders and schools, to bring us their solidarity outside the Teatro Mercadante, to give a clear signal of recomposition of the entire world of precarious work.

We believe it is necessary:

* In the immediate future, ensure that the years 2020 and 2021 are considered in full as notional contribution years for all workers in the sector;

* In the immediate future, planning and implementation of all economic and non-economic measures, relating to safety protocols, necessary to guarantee a true and total restart of the sector;

* In the immediate future, open a discussion table, which can no longer be postponed, between workers and the Ministry of Labour;

* Overcoming the system of bonuses which is clearly totally insufficient, to be replaced with a structural reform of social safety nets, as well as the implementation of a total reform of the sector which protects not only large institutions and companies but also and above all workers, as well as the implementation of measures aimed at financing all the small and very small entities which deal with entertainment and culture.
