At Mav the success of Virtual Tours continues. Many initiatives of the Museum to enjoy the beauty of ancient art and archaeology

The new season of the Festival continues successfully with great participation, albeit virtual. MAV, the Virtual Archaeological Museum of the City of Ercolano, following a promotional path that, after the umpteenth closure of museums due to the pandemic, intends to give a real answer to everyone's great desire for culture, thanks to its Virtual Tours in archaeology, which allow a complete use of the museum's offer, fully enjoying the technological magic of the new version MAV 5.0 - Virtual multiReality, the most advanced ever which, since October 2019, has radically revolutionized the way of living the cognitive experience at the Virtual Archaeological Museum of Ercolano. An immersive experience that, scientifically validated, will show everyone the great beauty of the Roman cities and homes on the slopes of Vesuvius and beyond, before the devastating and tragic eruption of 79 AD, in a timeless journey into the life and splendor of the main archaeological areas of Pompeii, Ercolano, Baia, Stabia and Capri.

Vesuvius, mirrored in the incomparable beauty of the Gulf of Naples, has always fascinated the world. Lying on the shores of the Tyrrhenian Sea, the Volcano has indelibly marked the history of the Campania region, making it fertile and lush, and devastating it with the explosive force of its eruptions, almost as if it were an ancient deity capable of giving well-being and destruction. And it is no coincidence that the etymology of the name Vesuvius could be derived from the Greek Hyésou Hyiòs – the son of he who makes it rain – from which the Latin name Vesuvius.

But who was the son of the one who makes the rain?

Zeus (Jupiter for the Romans) was the god of rain and his son, had by the queen of Thebes Alcmena, was the hero and demigod Hercules. Hence the veneration and celebration of his myth among the Roman population of all the Vesuvian towns: from Ercolano (the ancient Herculaneum), which also takes his name, to Pompeii, Oplontis and Stabiae. In fact, representations linked to the myth of the Greek hero were frequent everywhere, of the one who, symbol of strength, has marked not only Roman history in the celebratory tale of his deeds, from his birth to his labors, up to his apotheosis among the gods of Olympus.

The narration of the archaeology of the Vesuvian territory and the Gulf of Naples in Roman times is a treasure chest of new treasures of memory to be discovered and learned as demonstrated by the great success of the virtual school tours which, having now reached several thousand registrations from all over Italy, have made it necessary, on the part of the MAV, to create a Teacher Card for teachers for free use of the museum both virtually and in person (hopefully soon), and which informs them, via email, of all the innovations implemented by the museum to plan visits via DAD, meeting the needs of school groups before booking the virtual tour.

It is possible to book, every day of the week, the interactive Virtual Tours of the museum itinerary: a real journey into memory, lasting about 60 or 90 minutes, on the ZOOM platform, with a guide who, interacting with visitors, will lead them by the hand to discover the past, in the place where, through technology and light, the path of memory is retraced, giving shape to the invisible, to the denied, to what can no longer be seen and to what is not yet visible.

Digital visitors will thus learn about the organization and daily life of the ancient Romans of Vesuvius and the entire Gulf of Naples through the vision of the reconstructions of the places where the activities of the Herculaneum or Pompeii citizen took place and not only, over the course of a day, with the possibility of asking questions and requesting further information, following the narrative voice and interacting with an operator who will support the visit at all times.

Two virtual events are scheduled for next weekend:

Saturday 27 March at 18.00: VESUVIAN ERUPTIONS – a virtual journey to Pompeii and Herculaneum

Sunday 28 March at 18.00: LUXURY AND VILLAS IN THE GULF OF NAPLES – a virtual journey to Baia, Capri, Stabia, Boscoreale and Oplontis.

VESUVIAN ERUPTIONS – A virtual journey to Pompeii and Herculaneum

The first part of the journey will take place among the public places of the cities: those places present in every ancient Roman city. We will see the Theater of Herculaneum, where the inhabitants of the city flocked to attend the performances, the Baths, a very popular place of sociality, the Forum of Pompeii, the heart of the daily life of the city, dedicated to administrative and commercial activities, the gymnasium of the Schola Armaturarum, which collapsed in 2012 in Pompeii.

The second part is dedicated to the Pompeian Domus, visiting some of the most significant examples (House of the Tragic Poet, House of the Citharist, House of the Labyrinth, House of the Faun): the reconstruction of the private places will allow us to understand how the houses of the ancient Pompeians were organised, their rooms and the different functions for which they were intended.

The third part will be a journey into Pompeian and Herculaneum painting. Each fresco and mosaic will be fully described in its beauty and meaning, highlighting its details and specificities.

The fourth part of the journey will be dedicated to the Villa dei Papiri, one of the largest and most sumptuous Roman residences, brought to light by excavations during the Bourbon era, between 1750 and 1764. Its virtual reconstruction is a great attraction for the MAV, as the Villa extends under the current town of Ercolano, at a depth of about thirty meters, and reaches the sea. And its excavation, in addition to the extraordinary collection of works of art, has returned a large library of papyrus with Greek and Latin texts.

The journey will end with the reconstruction of the event that changed the history and geography of the Vesuvian area forever: the eruption of Vesuvius, narrated by the voice of the great actor Mariano Rigillo and reconstructed with the consultancy of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology in an extraordinary documentary film that will close our journey exactly at the point and moment in which everything began.

LUXURY AND VILLAS IN THE GULF OF NAPLES – A virtual journey to Baia, Capri, Stabia, Boscoreale and Oplontis

A Virtual Tour to discover the Gulf of Naples where Roman civilization had settled.

The Bay of Naples was famous for being a place of pleasure and luxury, thanks to its splendid landscape, the richness and fertility of its lands, the mild climate and the light that made sunrises and sunsets absolutely unforgettable.

The visit will show you the splendors and grandeur of the villas that from Baia to Oplontis, surrounded the coast like a crown, and will take you to Capri in the splendid Villa Jovis.

A complementary journey to the one around Pompeii and Herculaneum that will help you better understand the richness and history of the cities and the extraordinary Roman homes of the Gulf, chosen by the ancient Romans for the amenity of the places that are still a great international tourist attraction today.

For an entire day, visitors and tourists will be able to freely enter the ancient city buried by the eruption of Vesuvius, strolling along the cardini and decumani and discovering some of the site's iconic sites.
