“Gigi was a strong and gentle man, who fought a terrible disease with all his strength.”
This was declared in a note by the prosecutor of Naples, Giovanni Melillo, who thus expressed his condolences for the death of his colleague and friend Luigi Frunzio, deputy prosecutor of Naples, who died at the age of 62, after a battle against Covid that lasted several months. “A magistrate with rare qualities – underlines the Naples prosecutor – for prudence of judgment and rigor in evaluations. But also for great humanity. He was loved by all the men and women of our office. We have all lost a friend and an irreplaceable point of reference. It is a very sad day for all of us”.
De Magistris' CONDOLENCE FOR THE DEATH OF LUIGI FRUNZIO
“The Municipal Administration of Naples is close to the family and colleagues of Luigi Frunzio, deputy prosecutor of the District Anti-Mafia Directorate of Naples who passed away today, and remembers his great commitment and deep dedication to the work that led him in his long career to deal with delicate and important criminal proceedings”. This is what we read in a note from the mayor of Naples, Luigi de Magistris.
LUIGI FRUNZIO'S CAREER
During his career, he had dealt not only with investigations into the Camorra clans, but also with the waste issue. He had been entrusted with coordinating the investigations of the DDA relating to the territories of the province of Caserta. Last March, he had been appointed by the public prosecutor of Naples, Giovanni Melillo, as his deputy.

Luigi Frunzio, had two other children from a previous marriage with Mrs. Margherita: Gaia, who is now a notary, and Vincenzo. Both were very close to their father during his dramatic illness. The investigations that the deputy prosecutor and coordinator of the Naples District Anti-Mafia Directorate have carried out together with his magistrates, supported by the prosecutor Giovanni Melillo, are countless. Many have concerned the Casalesi clan and the infiltration of the Campania mafia in business. The latest activities coordinated by the magistrate who passed away today at the age of 64, have also concerned the attempts of organized crime to insinuate themselves into public administrations through vote trading. The Camorra's waste affair had also ended up in the sights of deputy prosecutor Frunzio.
THE SEIZURE OF MICHELE ZAGARIA'S TREASURE
Recently, under his coordination, the Naples Anti-Mafia Prosecutor's Office has achieved, among other things, the seizure of the so-called "treasure" of the super boss of the Casalesi clan, Michele Zagaria, who served a life sentence, consisting of apartments, luxury villas, companies and wellness centers, for a value of tens and tens of millions of euros, identified by investigators in Pitesti, Romania. Finally, Luigi Frunzio was the deputy prosecutor who, in 1991, decided to close the investigation against Diego Armando Maradona regarding the alleged tax fraud related to the compensation received by the Argentine footballer during his seven-year stay in Naples.
