Actor George Segal, star of “The Goldbergs,” has died. He was nominated for an Oscar in 1967 for his role in “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?”
He died yesterday at the age of 87 George SegalThe star best known for his role in the series “The Goldbergs” had received an Oscar nomination for best supporting actor in 67 for his performance in “Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf”, a film in which he starred alongside Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton.
“The family is devastated: this morning George Segal passed away due to complications from bypass surgery,” his wife Sonia announced.
“I will miss his warmth, his humor, his camaraderie and his friendship. He was a wonderful person,” said his longtime manager Abe Hoch. Over the course of his career, Segal starred in more than 50 films and with some of the best directors of the 60s and 70s, including Robert Altman, Mike Nichols, Paul Mazursky and Sidney Lumet.
The actor appeared in all eight seasons of the ABC sitcom “The Goldbergs.” In his heyday, he starred in “Goodbye Braverman,” “A Touch of Class,” “The Hot Stone,” and “Don’t Steal Unless It’s Strictly Necessary,” “Love and Disaster,” “The Troublemaker,” to name just a few of his most famous credits. In Italy, he starred in “Il suo modo di fare” directed by Franco Brusati in 1968, and in “A Bear Called Arturo” directed by Sergio Martino in 1992.
