Naples: Fire in the covered market in via Casale de Bustis
" The fire which developed in some commercial establishments of the covered market located in via Marcello Casale de Bust, in the Arenella district, the causes of which are currently being investigated, brings to mind the events that for several years have characterised the presence of this covered market, in an old building located in a densely populated area, such as the one between via Tino di Camaino and via Mario Fiore where, among other things, the Santobono pediatric hospital is also located.
"At the beginning of this century - Capodanno recalls - , to accommodate the commercial operators of this market it was decided to build a new municipal structure in via Francesco dell'Erba, still in Arenella, constructing a new five-story building, near the "Montedonzelli" station of the hilly metro, which was supposed to house them. But then, as soon as its construction was finished, in 2008, the news came out that it was not possible to relocate the operators in question, since, from subsequent checks, it was found that the building would not have possessed the requirements to be used as an indoor market for all the operators registered ".
“And yet, to build the building on Via dell'Erba – Capodanno emphasizes – 20 million euros were spent, equal to about 40 billion of the old lire, only to realize, in hindsight, that the structure, as designed and built, would not have been suitable for the use for which it had been intended, namely to host the commercial operators of the market on Via Casale de Bustis. Subsequently, the news also spread that the works to adapt the structure to its original purpose were so expensive that its construction was not recommended. From there, the decision to use the building in question as a parking lot.”
