Pasquale Amato, known as “'o Palumbaro”, enjoyed the help of public officials and was considered by the Guardia di Finanza and the Naples Public Prosecutor's Office to be the head of the “black market” of sea dates in Naples and the province.

Amato is among the six people for whom the investigating judge Egle Pilla Tuesday ordered prison. The public officials who helped him, for whom the judge ordered a ban on residence in the Campania Region, are Corporal Major Riccardo Ciliberti, a select chief of the Army (Armed Forces Water Division Command) stationed in San Giorgio a Cremano, and Angelo Esposito, a soldier serving with the Portici Coast Guard with the qualification of diver. The first allegedly helped Amato evade checks by the financial police on May 19, 2019, the day the Guardia di Finanza was looking for the “sea dates” previously extracted and left on the seabed, in a container.

When the Guardia di Finanza asked him for help in locating them, since he was there for sport fishing, he replied that it was impossible. "But you can't see anything... I was acting like an idiot...". This can be read in the wiretaps contained in the 542 pages of the precautionary order signed by the investigating judge Egle Pilla. Shortly after, however, he contacted Amato to let him know that he had helped him, lying to the GdF. The Coast Guard soldier, on the other hand, had warned Amato several times about the operations of the Judicial Police, in which he himself participated as a diver, regarding the illegal mussel farming fields that Amato managed in the waters of the Port of Naples.  The investigators, coordinated by the prosecutor Giulio Vanacore, have reconstructed the operating methods, contacts, business deals, and protection enjoyed by the date dealers, who are suspected of having committed criminal association aimed at very serious crimes such as environmental disaster, receiving stolen goods, and damage.

CONSUMERS' UNION and Legambiente Capri ready to BECOME civil parties

"We are ready and available to support - declare the lawyer Teodorico Boniello for the National Consumers Union of the Island of Capri and Nabil Pulita representative of Legambiente Capri - any action, including the constitution of civil party announced by the municipal administration, against those who have committed serious illegal acts by defacing the environment and the underwater ecosystem. The Faraglioni of Capri, as well as our coast, represent an asset of inestimable value, concludes the note. We must fight with all means those who, for mere economic reasons, are ready to disembowel the rock, endangering unique and rare beauties". Thus the representatives of the two associations after the maxiblitz against the black market of Sea Dates.
