While all of Italy celebrates the Supreme Poet Dante 700 years after his death, there are those who have besmirched his memory with acts of vandalism.
In fact, in Naples it happened that right in Piazza Dante the statue erected to celebrate the Supreme Poet, author of the Divine Comedy, was smeared with red paint. The story became known last March 16 also thanks to the intervention and public denunciation of the Regional Councilor Francesco Emilio Borrelli and to the municipal one Salvatore Iodice of Europa Verde.
“March 25 is the national day dedicated to Dante Alighieri, this date was chosen because it is the day that Dante scholars recognize as the beginning of the journey into the afterlife described in the Divine Comedy. To honor Dante and repair the damage done by some vandals, uncivilized and barbaric elements, we proposed to the Municipality and the Superintendence that we ourselves take care of cleaning the statue. By paying ourselves a fee, we have equipped ourselves with a pressure washer specifically to eliminate graffiti and vandalistic writings from the walls and monuments of our city. We want to actively contribute to literally erasing incivility and in this specific case to honor the Supreme Poet”. The words of Borrelli and Iodice.
