Killed because his mediation failed. Or rather his attempt to “fix” the tensions between the various clans of Fuorigrotta and the Phlegraean area.
The investigation into last night's murder of Antonio Volpe points in one direction only. Investigators believe he is the "eminence grise" of the Baratto-Bianco-Volpe criminal gang, known as "the Calascioni." According to the investigation, he was the brother-in-law of Antonio Bianco, a trusted man of two brothers believed to be the leaders of the Baratto Camorra gang. The hitmen struck a short distance from the tobacco shop run by the victim: the man was on foot in the street, the hitmen were on a scooter. Seven shots were fired, three of which hit, one to the head. The shooter, according to investigators, is among the crowd who shot Antonio Volpe last night, shortly after 7:30 p.m. police of the Investigative Unit of the Provincial Command, was certainly pursuing the objective of killing.

For investigators, Volpe (who has had a minor criminal record) was a sort of eminence grise of the underworld and his death could mean that there are tensions in the area. Obviously, other leads are not excluded, for example old grudges. According to what has been learned, the man would have played the role of "mediator" on several occasions between the factions fighting in this area of the city, to gain control of the illicit business. And his murder, if the criminal origin were confirmed, moreover carried out in a blatant manner and in "his" area, would mean that something has broken in the criminal balance of Fuorigrotta, also because, until now, those families had had no rivals.
In 2005 he had already escaped another ambush, also this one due to the way it was carried out (more than ten shots fired), designed to kill. The victims were lured into a trap. On that occasion Volpe was injured.
