No Dad in the square in Naples with school bus owners: "Schools closed for a year, government should intervene on the Campania case"
Among the mothers were also TV personalities like Veronica Maya and Maria Mazza, who were in the square in Naples this morning to support the other mothers of the 'Open Schools Campania' association.
The rally in via Nazario Sauro, not far from the headquarters of the Campania Region where the protesters are asking to reopen the school doors. A varied galaxy that also includes the teachers of the nursery schools adhering to the Sic (Campania Childhood Services) and the school transport operators, the drivers of the yellow minibuses (148 in the city of Naples alone) who have not worked or received support for a year.
In their lead, Veronica Maya and Maria Mazza. “I am not a denier and I understand the problem – says Veronica Maya, for years the face of Zecchino d'Oro – but Covid cannot be the pretext for total paralysis. We must learn to live with the virus. Also because not going to school does not eliminate the risks. I have three children in distance learning who spend at least six hours a day in front of the screen and we know how many dangers the PC hides. In-person school is irreplaceable for working parents and for the children themselves. We in the entertainment industry are privileged – she concludes – but I think it is right to support this battle and lend a hand to those who do not have the same opportunities as me. With vaccinated teachers I would have no problem sending my children to school”.
Maria Mazza agrees, pointing the finger at the Region and asking for the Government to intervene: “The Government – explains the showgirl – must guarantee uniformity. I don’t understand why my daughter who lives in Naples has to stay in Dad and my grandchildren who are in Rome can instead go to school in person. The Government must realize that there is a Campania case. In this region we haven’t gone to school for six months and I am lucky enough to be able to guarantee an excellent school for my daughter, where we do excellent Dad. But what about the others? The mothers of Miano, or those of Ponticelli, who don’t have the same opportunities as me? This is everyone’s battle. Furthermore, closing schools is a pleasure that is done to the Camorra, always ready to enlist new recruits”. Lined up in a circle are the yellow school transport buses.
Representing the drivers' reasons is Assodiritti leader Carlo Di Dato: "The Region has announced investments in public transport for 1 billion and 100 million for new trains and buses. We ask that the 100 million be diverted in favor of this category that has not worked for a year and that must pay huge insurance costs to get back on track and start again as soon as schools reopen. They are private sector workers who nevertheless offer a public service to an average of 10 thousand children in the city of Naples alone who have had no income for over a year, with schools closed. Our minibuses are sanitized, access is limited and safe". Nursery school teachers are asking to return to work. "Ours is a private service - explains Katia Mascolo, president of Sic - if we are closed no one will pay us. 15% of the facilities have closed their doors and the support provided by the previous government has only partially arrived due to a mix-up with INPS. We are only asking to return to work safely".
The mothers of the Open Schools association agree: “There are studies according to which children have a 50% reduced capacity for contagion – underlines Palmira Pratillo – and beyond everything, children's rights are not being taken into account here”.
“The State should have the courage to impose mandatory vaccination,” is the provocation of the lawyer Maria Grazia Celardo of the board of directors of “Scuole Aperte Campania”.
