Michael Often
He was born in 1948 in Cappella, known for being the original nucleus of the municipality of Monte di Procida, where he died on March 25, 2011. During his life he was a teacher at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples, an essayist and a poet.
He has published numerous books of verse: L'uomo al naturale (1978), Contropar(ab)ola (1981), Per specula aenigmatis (1990), Alla Madre (1993), Cumae (1998), Carbones (2002), Carta e formiche (2005) Bradyseism (2008), Superstiti (2009). From 2004 to 2011 he edited the poetry column 'Controluce' for the daily newspaper Il Mattino.
In 1998, the publication of Cumae earned him the Viareggio-Rèpaci Prize. With this extraordinary work, Sovente introduced trilingualism, which would become the distinctive feature of his production. In fact, he wrote in Italian, Latin and dialect without distinguishing areas and genres and used the three languages with equal communicative dignity. For our poet, Latin represented the language of his ancestors and testimony of an ancient world; dialect, on the other hand, was the mother tongue par excellence, the idiom of childhood and of a world that had passed but not disappeared, and finally Italian represented the language of literature and life.
Michele Sovente, tireless singer of the anxieties of existence, of the contradictions of our time and our land, a man of culture in the round, was able to embody the most ancient and authentic soul of his Phlegraean land, also through the hilarious interpretation of the human comedy. Onda Civica together with the Associations operating in the territory intends to continue to investigate, feels a strong duty to make known the figure of the poet from Capella who contributed to making his land known in Italy and abroad, thanks to the appreciation for his works. In this vein, Onda Civica will want to continue with activities that can enhance the poetry and history of the illustrious poet alongside the promotion of the entire territory starting right from Cappella, also focusing on schools, of all levels, and on young people.
