Villaricca Robbery: The Mystery of the Black Utility Vehicle

There is the mystery of the black small car in the deadly robbery in Villaricca in which the two bandits Ciro Chirollo and Domenico Romano lost their lives.

Or at least there would be, because the presence of this second car was revealed to investigators led by Giuseppe Gallo, the 26-year-old from Marano accused of murder but currently under investigation at large. The young man, an online clothing retailer, accompanied by his lawyer Domenico Della Gatta, admitted to being robbed and to having driven the Smart For 4, but denies ramming and killing the two robbers who died Friday evening. He said that several people robbed him, not only of his Rolex, but also of his car, and that he then fled on foot. He also said that he saw a black compact car at the scene while the robbery was taking place and that he had the impression they were accomplices waiting.

For now, Giuseppe Greco, 25 years old, with no criminal record, must answer for the voluntary homicide of Ciro Chirollo, 29 years old, and Domenico Romano, 39 years old, originally from Sant'Antimo and criminals, who died in via Antica consolare campana in Marano. This is his version to the prosecutor Paolo Martinelli of the Prosecutor's Office of North Naples. There are too many dark spots in his story and now investigators are trying to put the pieces of the investigative mosaic in the right place. First through scientific evidence on cars and motorcycles. Then through viewing the footage from private cameras in the area and then from the autopsy on the bodies of the two victims. At first glance, Ciro Chirollo and Domenico Romano had wounds compatible with the car's wheels having passed over them. Who was it? And why? Other accomplices due to an argument over the division of the loot? Not very credible. So we also need to verify whether Giuseppe Gallo was really driving the car. Investigators are also analyzing telephone traffic and especially the connection of smartphones to telephone repeaters in the area.

Chirollo and Romano had previous convictions for crimes against property and the person, and it is probable – it is noted in investigative circles – that they have already committed robberies like the one carried out yesterday evening. Therefore, net of these elements that would seem to converge towards the first and preferred hypothesis of a robbery that ended in tragedy following a disproportionate reaction of the robbed person, the dynamics are however far from clear, and this also because of the story provided by Greco. There are two questions in particular that investigators are trying to answer: whether Greco was in fact in the Smart, or perhaps another robber or a person that the 26-year-old is trying to cover up (this latter hypothesis is unlikely), and whether the accident that caused the death of Chirollo and Romano was voluntary or negligent. For now, however, the reconstruction that emerged after the fact remains valid, namely that 26-year-old Greco was on board the Smart when he was approached by Chirollo and Romano who were travelling on the scooter; the two allegedly stopped him and threatened him with a gun, making him hand over the Rolex, and then fled at full speed. At that point Greco allegedly started chasing them, catching up with them and ramming them, making them fly from the vehicle and fall violently onto the asphalt, a collision that caused almost immediate death. Greco also lost control of the car, crashing into a wall; he then got out and fled, then went to the police station to tell his version.

According to what he himself reported during the interrogation, the two on the scooter robbed him by threatening him with a gun, while some accomplices forced him to leave the car in which they then drove away. In short, the incident is far from clear and will need to be shed light on in the coming days. Greco's father has a criminal record for drug trafficking, but this circumstance at the moment does not seem to have any connection with what happened yesterday evening.
