A hornet's nest of controversy has been unleashed on social media over a funeral in Scafati complete with a musical band.
It happened at the cemetery, where thirty-five people were identified and fined this afternoon by the Scafati Carabinieri for violating anti-Covid regulations. The officers determined that they were from nearby Boscoreale. Among them were ten members of a musical band from Casola and the 25 participants in the funeral procession. The investigations were also carried out with the support of local police officers. The mayor of municipality of Scafati, Cristoforo Salvati, assured that "further investigations are underway" to ascertain any further responsibilities.
the mayor's position saved
“We join in the grief of the deceased’s family,” he explains, “but this is a particularly difficult time and we must strictly adhere to the rules. It is absurd that, despite the provisions in force for the Covid emergency, a funeral was organized with a band in tow and with so many people gathered. It is truly disconcerting,” Salvati concluded, “to acknowledge the fact that people do not want to understand how difficult it is to deal with this emergency. Everyone’s efforts risk being undermined by the irresponsible behavior of a few.”
the explanations of the victim's relatives
But the family of the victim, Mrs Maria C., 70 years old, explain that there was no violation of the anti-covid rules because the body of the lady who died of covid at Cotugno of Naples arrived directly at the cemetery. And there was a farewell from a distance from the relatives who were in the permitted number, the funeral with the band were the last wishes of the victim. The deceased and her relatives live in the municipality of Boscoreale but just 50 meters from the border with Scafati so much so that they buried the woman in the Scafatese cemetery where they have a burial niche.
