Earthquake in the Adriatic, the earth continues to shake: nine tremors

Earthquake tremors, about 10 minutes apart, are shaking central Italy today, March 27: the seismic swarm continues.

The first shock, more violent, was recorded at 14,47 pm with a magnitude of 5.6, the second at 15 pm with a magnitude of 59, then in succession others of lesser intensity until 4.1 pm with a shock of magnitude 15,21, and then again at 4.0 pm with a magnitude of 15,45. The INGV institute made the announcement Volcanology.

The earthquakes were located in the Adriatic Sea at a depth of 5 kilometers, the second of 10 kilometers, the third at a depth of 11 km. The earth shook throughout central Italy: Puglia, Abruzzo, Campania, Molise and Lazio in particular. Numerous calls to the fire brigade switchboard, for now no damage to people or things has been reported.

A third earthquake, again in the Central Adriatic Sea, of magnitude 3.4 was recorded at 15.12 by the INGV.

The earthquake that occurred this afternoon in the Central Adriatic "was felt by the population". This was announced by the Department of Civil Protection on Twitter. "The Italian Situation Room - reads the tweet - is in contact with the civil protection structures on the territory". The epicenter was identified 100 kilometers from the Tremiti Islands.

"In this area, seismicity from 1985 to today is very frequent with events of magnitude ML between 4.0 and 4.9 like those that occurred in 1988 and 2007 located south of this afternoon's epicenter. Looking at the Parametric Catalog of Italian Earthquakes, the INGV said, in the area there is also an earthquake with an epicenter just west of this afternoon's event, which occurred on January 2, 1978 with an estimated magnitude of Mw 5.0. The shaking map calculated from data from the seismic and accelerometric networks of INGV and DPC shows shaking levels of up to the fourth degree Mcs both on the coasts of Puglia and on those of Croatia. The earthquake was felt in a very large area of ​​central-southern Italy, particularly in the Adriatic area. As can be seen from the data collected by the questionnaire "Did you feel the earthquake?", with effects estimated, at the moment, up to the V-VI degree MCS on the coasts of Puglia, especially in the municipalities of Gargano, in the province of Foggia. Widespread resentments up to the coasts of Marche, but also in Campania and Lazio.
