Percussionist, vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, music therapist, teacher and composer, after the release of the album “L'ultimo sogno blu” (at the beginning of 2020), Umberto Vitiello returns to the scene with a new video, out for Aventino Music: “Linea di confine”.

Umberto Vitiello returns with a song in which he brings out all his experiences around the world and his passion for the southern hemisphere, from Brazil to Africa, mixing them with jazz and singer-songwriter, in a hybrid where the world matrix reigns supreme.

Thanks to Umberto Vitiello's passion and love for every form of expression and humanity, 'Linea di confine' features, alongside the guitars, instruments from all over the world, from the udu (a clay vase, an instrument of the Yoruba culture of Nigeria) to the tumbadora (of Afro-Cuban origin), from straw brooms to the Brazilian caxixi, passing through the glockenspiel slats and the cajon.

All the instruments appear in the video, as protagonists, next to a particular anthropomorphic sculpture originating from the Bijagos Islands:

“The anthropomorphic sculpture has an interesting story that perhaps deserves to be told. It comes from the Bijagos Islands, an archipelago in Guinea Bissau. In some of these islands, at least until the 80s, when I went there, there was no money in circulation, but barter was practiced, and I exchanged various T-shirts for tools and statuettes. This one, in particular, represents a dance to keep away hippos, which devastate crops and are also dangerous for men and especially children. The proportions between the mask representing the animal's head and the head of the person who was supposed to wear it are exactly those that can be seen from the statuette, so we are talking about solid wood masks that can weigh up to 30 or 40 kg. When I was there, it was explained to me that that propitiatory dance had not been done for a few decades, because the new generations did not have a strong enough neck to be able to move quickly, with all that weight on their heads”.

'Linea di confine' anticipates the release of the musician's next album, 'Temporada', scheduled for early 2021.

“This single has little to do with the upcoming album. And, in fact, it won't be part of it. I'm referring to the language, the mood. But, strangely, it somehow manages to describe it, to tell it, anticipating it. And the strange things, often, are the most interesting”.
