Now that spring has arrived, many people are already thinking about summer and wondering if they will be able to travel and planning a vacation in 2021. Unfortunately, this is a question that is certainly a hot topic during this period characterized by uncertainty due to the recent health situation. Still struggling with bans, restrictions and travel restrictions, the tourism sector is struggling to restart. In a country where a large part of the population and economy is supported by internal and especially external tourist flows, it becomes it is essential to think about how to reorganise in complete safety. In fact, it is not enough to restart, but health safety is necessary to prevent infections from rising again.

The Hellenic Model: The Solutions of the Government of Athens

A possible solution could come from the Greek model, another country that relies heavily on tourism. In fact, Greece has already started a vaccination campaign aimed specifically at the tourism sector. Added to this is the fact that Greece has declared that it will accept entry only to people able to show a vaccination passport or, alternatively, immunity to the virus. The example has already been followed by other states or individual territories such as Sardinia. In fact, they can restart cheap tourist villages in Sardinia thanks to the offers and to a model of this type.

Greece reopens its doors in May for all vaccinated people coming from the rest of the European Union, thus finally being able to organize their holidays. All people who are show a vaccination passport, the prototype of which was presented a few days ago by the European Commissioner for the vaccination campaign. Alternatively, people can also enter the country with a negative swab carried out in the previous days. It seems that the Sardinian island will also adopt a system of this kind to welcome tourists without risks.

On the domestic front, Greece has organized a vaccination campaign that is aimed precisely at the tourism and holiday sector. In fact, it has started vaccinating especially on the islands, which are the main destination for tourists. Some small islands have already “covid free” goal achieved.

Some critical issues to highlight: between green passes and slow vaccinations

However, even if this system may seem like the solution, some limitations must still be highlighted. First of all, the vaccination passport, which will probably be called Digital Green Pass, is not ready yet. Some limitations must be kept in mind legal and political obstacles. In fact, according to the privacy guarantor, using sensitive information such as medical information to limit the movement of people goes against constitutional rights.

Furthermore, the vaccination campaign is not proceeding successfully, mainly due to delivery delays. Furthermore, we proceed by categories and while some people are vaccinated, such as the elderly, others are not. Young people who are notoriously the most likely to travel, are still excluded from vaccination campaigns and they don't even know when they will be able to be immunized. However, it seems that presenting a negative swab taken in the days prior to arrival, can enough to land in Sardinia and finally start the summer holidays.
