Animal Save Movement Vigil at Pompeii Slaughterhouse

Today at 4.30 in the morning the activists of Naples Animal Save Movement they went to the Pompeii slaughterhouse “CSM Soc. Coop. Asl” to document the suffering of the animals transported to these places. It was the last vigil of the “Vigil Month”, an initiative that saw activists, throughout the month of March, engaged in vigils for animals destined for slaughter and sold in the markets.

The initiative is spread on social media with the hashtag of “Vigil Month”. Taking part in these initiatives is difficult, hard and terrifying, but it also means establishing a connection with the animals. Giving them comfort, caresses and empathy that, unfortunately, in their short and sad life they have never had or in very rare cases. It also serves to document the transport of the animals, to show people that we are talking about individuals. Making them understand that they are not products, but living and sentient beings, who experience feelings such as fear, happiness, joy, love, just like us human beings.

This time, however, the activists were denied the ability to stop the trucks, as the drivers refused, despite the peace sign. The reason was not clarified. In addition, there were two police vans and a dozen officers, almost as if something dangerous or violent was about to happen. To this behavior of unavailability - remember that stopping the truck is useful and documenting the transport of the animals and giving them a few cuddles, water and affectionate gestures, before their death, the activists, wanting to make it clear that the demonstration is peaceful and open to dialogue - the activists gathered in a circle. They displayed placards, candles and sang the song "Power to the Animals" by Animal Liberation. Because we are all animals, with the only difference that humans can put an end to this abuse.

Afterwards, they arranged themselves, with the distances prescribed for the anti-Covid regulations, in front of the slaughterhouse and asked for the animals to be freed, reiterating that they are not our property, they are not objects and not even products. They are against this system that abuses animals every day, systematically. The goal is to change it, because it is based on the death and suffering of individuals and not objects. The activists are asking for the conversion of this activity into a company that no longer profits from animal suffering. The project of reconverting the structure was also suggested, with obviously an adequate Business plan.

We invite people to reflect and participate in these events, because it is important to know what is around us. We ask government and industry leaders to create a more just food system by abandoning animal agriculture altogether. By offering new jobs for slaughterhouse owners, converting slaughterhouses into industries for plant-based and eco-sustainable products. In this time of pandemic, we urgently need to make changes so we do not find ourselves fighting with other zoonoses, to avoid the destruction of our planet but above all to improve ourselves because torturing hundreds of thousands of sentient individuals every year uselessly just to feed the ego of multinationals is unacceptable, morally and intellectually. This is not technological progress, it is our greatest failure.
