In Naples 'underwear flash mob' to reopen everything

They chose the symbol of the protest as the pants to underline the disparity in closures between product categories, so those who sell underwear can stay open while those who sell t-shirts cannot. Around one hundred and fifty women (the men could be counted on the fingers of one hand) took to the streets of Naples for the flash mob of the underwear. Shopkeepers and saleswomen, who were also joined by many customers, belonging to the categories most penalized by the anti-Covid provisions (clothing, jewelry and footwear) formed a human chain with the ladies who instead of holding hands held each other by squeezing a woman's underwear between their fingers.

“Because underwear doesn’t cause Covid, while clothes, shoes and jewelry do” was the most popular slogan among the protesters. The provocation took place along the sidewalks of two of Chiaia’s shopping streets, between via Filangieri and via dei Mille, and ended with a long round of applause at the Pan museum. Pet dogs were also enlisted, naturally in solidarity and with underwear around their necks instead of the standard muzzle. Such joviality obviously couldn’t go unnoticed, attracting the sympathy of passers-by, many of whom expressed solidarity by filming and photographing the protest.

"We ask not to be invisible - explains Roberta Bacarelli, president of Federmoda Confcommercio Napoli - to be able to reopen and reopen forever without any more distinctions of bands because it cannot be a product category that penalizes us. In this period we thought that perhaps we did it all wrong, that perhaps we should have opened a video game store, an underwear store, and not a clothing store since they were allowed to open while we are closed with enormous problems, not only for us entrepreneurs, but also for our employees who have not received redundancy payments since November. In Campania 5000 points of sale have closed, traders have lost from 40 to 60% if, as in my case, you focus a lot on weddings and ceremonies, a completely lost market share. I go crazy - underlines Bacarelli - at the thought that video games are considered an essential element and we are not".

It was a very female protest: “Because women do more to do – the explanation – and have more initiative as well as the courage to expose themselves and take to the streets. But behind them there are still their husbands in the shops”. On the same wavelength Carla Della Corte, president of Confcommercio Napoli, with Roberta Bacarelli and Claudia Catapano, president of Chiaia District, among the promoters of the protest. “It was a great success – she underlines – and a great demonstration of solidarity. Here is the Naples that works and that wants to react that joins our protest which is a strong protest because we must reopen. It is truly unfair to keep only jewelry, shoe and clothing stores closed. In our stores the contagion does not occur. We have felt discriminated against since November 18, when Prime Minister Conte decided that only some categories were included among essential goods and he opened everything leaving only us closed. Now that's enough, it's no longer possible, we have to open to pay suppliers and rent. We can't go on like this."

In some areas of the city, a few exasperated shopkeepers are opening: "Not us - specifies Della Corte -. Despite everything, we will abide by the rules, there will be no unauthorized openings. Many shops have expanded the Ateco code by selling underwear because it seems that underwear does not cause Covid and the rest does. We must all be able to reopen".
