Massimo Cuttitta died at the age of 54 in Albano Laziale due to complications arising from testing positive for Covid-19.

This is communicated by The Fir in a note. Massimo, Azzurro n. 423, made his debut with Italy in Naples in 1990 against Poland, then wearing the national team jersey on sixty-nine other occasions until 2000, the year of his international retirement after having played a leading role in his debut in the Six Nations against Scotland, in the unforgettable success on 5 February at the Flaminio. On twenty-two occasions, Cuttitta had led the Italian National Rugby team as captain.

Born in Latina, but raised as a rugby player in South Africa like his twin brother Marcello, Massimo wore the shirts of L'Aquila, Amatori Calvisano, Milan and the London Harlequins during his career, taking part in two editions of the World Cup and wearing the black and white of the Barbarians on several occasions.

The FIR recalls that on twenty-two occasions, Cuttitta had led the Italian Rugby National Team as captain. After his experience overseas, he had covered the role of player-coach for numerous Italian clubs – Bologna, Rugby Roma, Alghero and Leonessa – before arriving as a forwards coach in Edinburgh and, from there, at the Scottish federation, relaunching the Highlander pack on the international scene with his work. More recently, he had put his experience as a scrum coach at the service of emerging national teams such as Romania, Canada and Portugal, carrying out consultancy roles for their respective technical staffs.
