“L'oro di famiglia”, directed by Emanuele Pisano, nominated as Best Short Film at the David di Donatello 2021
“L'oro di famiglia”, by Sicilian director Emanuele Pisano and Campania author Olimpia Sales, nominated in the “Best Short Film” category at the “David di Donatello 2021” awards.
A huge success for the independent short film produced and distributed by “Pathos Distribution”, a film production and distribution company that aims to spread avant-garde, experimental, innovative short films in festivals and in the sales circuit on streaming and TV platforms.
A little over 1 year after its first screening, the short film has already won the “Rai Cinema Channel” award at the Ortigia Film Festival, has received more than 30 awards at national and international festivals and has also been selected by the “Italian Federation of Arthouse Cinema – FICE” for the “Short Films, What a Passion” initiative.
Directed by Emanuel Pisano, author together with Olimpia Sales also of the screenplay, the protagonist of the short is the Sicilian actor Danilo Arena. “L'oro di famiglia” was born from a need: to tell the visceral bond that grips man to his origins and his past.
Salvo, the protagonist, and his friend Fabrizio rob a villa that seems to promise big profits. The two take the loot to a junk dealer, but only manage to scrape together a few pennies. Among the unsold loot is a family photo album. Salvo is tough and has more important things on his mind, but the thought that he doesn't even have a souvenir photo starts to flash through his mind, leading him to search for his family album.

The director
Born in 1988 in Scordia, in the province of Catania, Emanuele Pisano graduated in 2009 from the Dams of “Roma Tre”. He achieved fame in the short film circuit in 2009 with “Rec Stop & Play”, which won several awards, including the prize for best short at the “Taormina Film Fest”.
He is the director of many music videos for artists such as Ultimo, Briga, Mostro, Low-low and Gianluca Grignani. Between 2018 and 2019 he directed the second and third seasons of the series “Sara e Marti” for Disney Channel. He also directed “Sara e Marti – Il film”. Since 2014 he has worked as a television director for various Rai, Mediaset and Discovery programs.
“The directing style comes from the desire to get as deep into the story as possible: the camera thus becomes another actor that wanders into the places trodden by the protagonist – says director Emanuele Pisano – However, it is a deliberately imprecise gaze. In fact, I tried to work on the unpredictability of the choices made from time to time by the character. This is why the camera spies, but never anticipates the protagonist's movements: it simply waits for his decisions”.
The author
Born in Pagani, in the province of Salerno, in 1990. After high school, she graduated from Dams of “Roma Tre” and then from the department of “Arts, music and entertainment” of “La Sapienza”. In 2015, she was among the scriptwriters of “063139”, a web series that won the Solinas Award. "The protagonist's need is to relive a moment tied to his past. It is an impulse that pushes him to divert his steps to put back in place the most precious thing a family unit can have: memories. The protagonist of the short, therefore, floats in the hope that a memory, obscured by time, can return vividly through simple photos - said Olimpia Sales, author of the screenplay together with director Pisano - Nostalgia for what we have been and for our family never abandons us: it is a curse to which we are all condemned".
The protagonist of “L'oro di famiglia” is the Sicilian actor Danilo Arena. After graduating several times as an Italian champion of Caribbean dances, at the age of 21 Danilo Arena received a scholarship at the “College Arti e Mestieri dello Spettacolo” in Catania, which he attended for two years, graduating, and in 2017 at the “Scuola di Cinema” in Rome “Sentieri Selvaggi”. His debut on Rai took place with the productions “Che Dio ci aiuti 4” and “Prima che la notte”.
