The testing of the Italian anti-Covid-19 vaccine created by Takis officially began today at Pascale with the first injection.

A vaccine entirely made in Italy involving three hospitals: one in the North, San Gerardo in Monza; one in the Center, Spallanzani in Rome; and Pascale in Naples, for the South. The three centers are involved in the Phase I/II trial. Phase I will involve 80 healthy volunteers divided into four groups with different doses administered with or without a booster, while Phase II will involve up to 240 subjects on the most promising doses. In Naples, Paolo Ascierto's team has been selecting volunteers, all healthy subjects, aged 18 to 60, for a month. And this morning, the trial began. The first dose was injected into a 26-year-old young IT professional from Naples. He is the first, along with numerous other volunteers, to have responded to the email.ovid.evax@Istitutotumori.na.it by connecting to the Institute's portal a month ago.

CANDIDATES ARE ACCEPTED

Mail that is still open for those who want to join. Candidates for the trial are subjected to blood tests and medical visits. After the injection they remain under observation in the hospital for four hours. They are taken care of by oncologists Marco Palla, Antonio Grimaldi, Luigi Scarpato, Claudia Trojaniello, Mariagrazia Vitale, Marcello Curvietto, all of Paolo Ascierto's team. "The Pascale will have a decisive role in expanding the number of subjects for each dose, in order to consolidate the results. Among other things - says Ascierto, director of the Melanoma, Oncological Immunotherapy and Innovative Therapies Unit of the Institute - the DNA vaccine can be easily and quickly modified to take into account the variants of the virus that are becoming prevalent or that may appear in the future".

Unlike other technological platforms already available, messenger RNA or viral vector, Covid-eVax is a DNA vaccine, which allows avoiding the cold chain in storage and transport. Due to its characteristics, the production of the antigen is prolonged over time and the vaccine could work well already in the first cycle. Furthermore, if necessary, the administration can be repeated several times for a more solid immune response. "We are very proud - says the general director of Pascale, Attilio Bianchi - to coordinate this research on the Italian vaccine. It is the recognition of the quality and reliability of our research systems that we put at the service of our patients every day. Thanks to Paolo Ascierto's team and to all the components of our Institute engaged daily".
