Naples, at the Elementary 'Morelli' applause at the sound of the bell. Parents hope to get to the end of the year in attendance
A round of applause accompanied the return to class of the children of the 'Morelli' elementary school in Napoli. In Campania today the bell rang again for kindergarten, elementary school and first year middle school students.
For the other students we will still have to wait and for now they will remain in distance learning.
“There is a bit of concern,” says a mother outside the 'Vanvitelli' elementary school, “but it was right that they returned to class. For such young children, distance learning, no matter how extraordinary the teachers have been, is not good, it is violence.”
At the entrance to the school, which is located in the pedestrian area of Via Scarlatti, two municipal police officers ensured that gatherings were avoided, repeatedly reminding parents not to linger and to keep their distance. Before entering, school staff took the temperature of all children.
The parents' hope is that we can get to the end of the school year. "There are only two months left now," a mother points out, "if after all this we can't even get to the natural end of the year, I wonder what the point of restrictions and vaccines is."
Another mother who says: “My daughter asked me yesterday: Mom, how long will I be able to go to school now?”. Also reassuring families is the vaccination plan that has involved all school staff as a priority. “Knowing that teachers are vaccinated,” a father pointed out, “certainly makes us feel more at ease, but we have always believed that school should be in person.”
Some parents point out that the problem is not inside the schools. “In the classroom,” says Aldo, a father with two children in middle school, “the kids respect the distancing measures but once outside without the supervision of the teachers it is easier for them to behave naturally, as they have always been used to. Unfortunately, like everyone else, they have to get used to this new way of living at least until herd immunity is reached. For now it takes a lot of attention but also a bit of luck.”
