Naples, the boom in feminicides: from Alessandra Madonna to Ornella Pinto
"My daughter dreamed of becoming a social worker and that dream was brutally shattered by the man who claimed to love her. Today I am moved by the idea that in her memory and to honor her memory we can support the studies of two future social workers." This is what Vincenzo Madonna, father of Alessandra Madonna, talks about his excitement in view of the award ceremony of the “Alessandra Madonna” scholarships reserved for two particularly brilliant students of the Master's Degree in Programming, Administration and Management of Social Policies and Services at the Suor Orsola Benincasa University of Naples.
Almost 4 years have passed since that tragic night of September 8, 2017 in which the 24-year-old from Melito di Napoli, Alessandra Madonna, died as a result of the injuries sustained from what the trial reconstructions revealed as a long dragging while clinging to the car of her then boyfriend, Giuseppe Varriale. And there was a long and painful trial process that is still awaiting its definitive end after the recent ruling by the Court of Cassation which confirmed the qualification of the crime (unintentional homicide) but referred the redetermination of the sentence (currently set at 8 years and two months of imprisonment) to another section of the Court of Assizes of Naples. "Long years in which the pain of losing a daughter was added to that of having to see that probably her murderer, still under house arrest today awaiting the final judgment of the appeal, will not spend even a day in prison", says Vincenzo Madonna.
That never-healing pain will find some comfort in seeing two young people rewarded on Thursday, April 15 at 15.30:23 p.m. in the Pagliara Library of the Suor Orsola Benincasa University of Naples (with live streaming on www.facebook.com/unisob/live) who are brilliantly pursuing the professional path that Alessandra Madonna dreamed of: the 24-year-old Neapolitan, Emmanuele Palumbo, a professional educator for minors at the “Regina Pacis” Center in Naples, and the XNUMX-year-old from Piano di Sorrento, Sara Staiano, a social worker specialized in home care for minors at the Prisma Cooperative in Meta.
The Suor Orsola Benincasa University of Naples, on the occasion of the award ceremony of the “Alessandra Madonna” scholarships, has decided to also promote a reflection dedicated to the theme “The pedagogical emergency of gender violence” which will be introduced by Enricomaria Corbi, director of the Department of Educational, Psychological and Communication Sciences of the Suor Orsola Benincasa University, Samuele Ciambriello, guarantor of the Prisoners of Campania and Flavia Matrisciano, director of the Santobono-Pausilipon Foundation.
The boom in feminicides in Italy in the first three months of 2021 and the latest case of Ornella Pinto, a Neapolitan teacher who graduated from Suor Orsola
Among the topics of the discussion promoted by Suor Orsola there will be the boom in feminicides (already 13 in Italy in the first three months of 2021 with the latest victim being the professor Ornella Pinto, a brilliant graduate of the Suor Orsola Benincasa University in Naples) and the escalation of gender violence (in Italy, Istat data show that 31,5% of women have suffered some form of physical or sexual violence in their lives). At the speakers' table there will be Fabrizio Manuel Sirignano, president of the Degree Course in Primary Education Sciences at the Suor Orsola Benincasa University, Maria Rosaria Astarita, social worker coordinator of the Municipality of Castellamare di Stabia and Rosaria Antonia Maschione, social worker of the Association "A Voce Alta" of Salerno.
“Unfortunately, gender violence has always existed – underlines Prof. Sirignano, full professor of General and Social Pedagogy at Suor Orsola – but the numerical dimensions that the phenomenon is assuming in recent years configure a very serious pathology of society and therefore a pathology of education and communication that require a real revolution of the educational system that acts in the transmission of the values of democracy (from education to citizenship to respect for differences) starting from primary school in the wake of the pedagogical tradition of the thought of John Dewey who identified precisely in the school system that 'miniature democracy' that forms the citizens of every political and social community”.
The “Excellent Graduates” Award ALSOB Social Workers Section
At the end of the conference, the president of ALSOB, Association of Graduates of the Suor Orsola Benincasa University, Lucilla Gatt will award the special prize “Excellent Graduates – Social Workers Section” to Maria Rosaria Astarita and Rosaria Antonia Maschione.
