First official day in Pompeii for the new General Director of the Archaeological Park Gabriel Zuchtriegel
First official day at Pompei for the new General Director of the Gabriel Archaeological Park Zuchtriegel, appointed on February 20 by the Minister of Culture Dario Franceschini, in succession to Massimo Osanna, current Director General of the State Museums. His appointment was countersigned yesterday by the Minister for Public Administration, Renato Brunetta.
The new director was chosen from 44 candidates, 10 of whom are of foreign origin, who were examined by the Commission chaired by Marta Cartabia, President Emeritus of the Constitutional Court and currently Minister of Justice. At the end of the selection, concluded with the interviews of the ten candidates on the short list, held on 10 and 11 February, the commission identified the three candidates submitted to the Minister, from whom the new director who took office today was appointed.
Gabriel Zuchtriegel, born in 1981 in Weingarten, Germany, studied classical archaeology, prehistory and Greek philology in Berlin, Rome and Bonn, where in 2010 he completed a PhD on the Lazio site of Gabii near Rome. He was a scholarship holder of the German Archaeological Institute and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, which in 2012 took him to the University of Basilicata (Matera) for a three-year research project on Greek colonization along the Ionian coast. He has taught at the universities of Bonn, Matera, Naples “Federico II” and is the author of numerous articles and monographs, including “Colonization and Subalternity in Classical Greece”, Cambridge University Press 2018. In 2019, he was awarded the Ravenna Festival prize. In 2015, he collaborated in the “Grande Progetto Pompei” as a member of the Technical Design Secretariat. Since November 2015, he has directed the Paestum Archaeological Park, to which the Velia site was added in 2020, both of which are listed as UNESCO heritage sites. Zuchtriegel, who is married with two children, is of German origin; since 2020, he has also been an Italian citizen.
