Waste fires in Campania, the result of the “first four months” of 2021

Press release from the Office of the Commissioner for Combating the Phenomena of bonfires of waste in the Region Campania:
“The month of March just ended recorded a number of arson events equal to that of March 2020 (the month of total lockdown); however, the figure appears to be increasing compared to that of the previous four-month period (from November 2020 to February 2021) recorded an increase in arson events, with particular reference to those consumed in the locality of “Ponte Riccio” in the municipality of Giugliano in Campania: already in the past months of January and February out of a total in the two provinces of Naples and Caserta of 150 waste fires (78 in January and 72 in February); 11 (equal to 8% of the total) next to the irregular housing settlement of Ponte Riccio; in the month of March the fires in the two provinces were 117, of which 11 (equal to 9% of the total) occurred in the same locality. It must be added that these are fires of significant extension.

In any case, as can be seen from the table below, control and repression interventions are constantly increasing, and alongside the traditional checks on companies (industrial, commercial or agricultural), they are focused on the control and prevention of waste dumping in areas adjacent to irregular housing settlements, also through the identification of people, both on the ground and from the air (drones), and the seizure of vehicles carrying waste there”.
