Breast cancer, the “women’s project” of the Breast Unit starts at Federico II

Breast cancer, at the Federico II University Hospital in Naples the “Woman Project” of the Breast Unit directed by Francesco D'Andrea, director of the plastic surgery department and new director of the surgical pathway reserved for female breast problems, who emphasizes: «At this time when the pandemic continues to run and infections are not decreasing or remaining stable, beyond the problems related to vaccination plans that are spread out too far over time and restrictions that are in my opinion inadequate, plastic surgery continues to do its duty by operating at the level of the national health system on pathologies that cannot stop in the face of the health emergency, namely tumors».

“WOMEN’S PROJECT”

Maximum attention from D'Andrea to problems related to the breast and, consequently, to women. From this assumption starts the new project of the Federico II University Hospital of Naples strongly desired by the general director Anna Iervolino and the health director Emilia Vozzella: «In the role of head of the surgical path of the Breast Unit – explains D'Andrea – together with all the staff we have set in motion a specific program, in order to resume the screening campaigns for breast cancer currently stopped and above all to offer in an adequate and timely manner the resolution to all three hundred and sixty degrees of problems that concern the female breast, from diagnosis to therapy». But what will be the novelties? «The entire path that is due to the woman will have an added value that not all breast care centers offer, especially in the South: that of having a structure available that allows to respect the international quality standards of breast cancer therapy, including at the same time the reconstruction of the breast itself».

In fact, the data for 2020 in Italy are alarming: according to the latest Aiom-Airtum report, the most frequently diagnosed tumor is breast cancer (54.976, equal to 14,6% of all new tumor diagnoses). "We know that breast cancer is constantly growing - continues D'Andrea - and that the treatment, often surgical followed by oncological treatments, does not include breast reconstruction in all facilities and therefore the demolition of the breast due to cancer, thus becoming a disaster also from a psychological point of view. At our company, however, we offer a complete path to those who are unfortunate enough to encounter cancer, including at the same time all the most modern techniques for breast reconstruction itself".
