Poaching in Ischia: 50 birds of protected species hunted illegally in a freezer

The Casamicciola Terme Forestry Carabinieri have conducted numerous anti-poaching operations on the "green" island. With the support of the Ischia Carabinieri and the technical assistance of the WWF, checks and searches were carried out to combat illegal hunting.

Thanks to images captured by cameras hidden at strategic points on the island, they caught a man with a criminal record from Forio d'Ischia who, in a hunting position, was holding a rifle equipped with a silencer.

They reached the hunting area and conducted an inspection with officers from the local station. Having identified the hunter, they searched his home, finding 20 cartridges of various calibers and, inside a freezer, 50 specimens of wild birds protected by the Berne Convention. The weapon was not recovered, but the man, in his sixties, was charged with illegal possession of a clandestine homemade weapon equipped with a silencer, possession of ammunition, hunting during a hunting season, and possession of particularly protected species.

In the municipality of Barano d'IschiaThe same officers reported a 65-year-old local man for illegal possession of weapons and ammunition, hunting during a hunting season, and game theft. On his farmland, the man had set traps, which he used to capture a Common Redstart, a particularly protected species. Two rifles, 23 9mm cartridges, and a jar containing mealworms used as bait in the traps were found in his home.
