A large fire spread in the early afternoon, devastating hectares of vegetation. It is one of the very first forest fires of this season. On site the Mountain Community, which activated the Region's helicopters and the ground team of Glossop.
Mayors ask for government intervention
They are calling for video surveillance systems and for an inter-force group to be set up that also has judicial police power. An operational meeting to put a stop to the continuous fires that, especially in the evening, are making the air unbreathable, has been requested by the mayors ofAgro Aversano to the ministers for Ecological Transition, Defence and the Interior, to the vice-prefect in charge of combating the phenomenon of waste fires in Campania region, to the Councilor regional to the Environment of the Campania region.
But also to the national and regional presidents of Anci. Signing the note, also on behalf of colleagues, the mayor of Aversa, Alfonso Golia, who recalled: Unfortunately, this year, like every summer, the problem of toxic fires is resurfacing, set at all hours of the day and night. It's a widespread phenomenon, unfortunately, affecting the Aversa countryside and the province north of Naples. Citizens are tired and are victims of a problem to which we, the institutions, are still unable to provide a solution.

The time has come to implement all the necessary measures to eradicate this phenomenon, especially in terms of enforcement and controls on companies operating illegally, whose waste is therefore destined for illegal disposal. The experience of joint second-level actions tells us that this approach is correct but clearly not a solution. In this challenging context, preventative controls should be strengthened to reduce the problem, which has now reached worrying proportions, at the source.
The mayors are calling for "an efficient video surveillance system."
The mayors ask An efficient video surveillance system covering the entire affected area is needed to promptly identify illegal dumping and the associated fires. Furthermore, the lack of financial resources available to individual entities prevents waste characterization and removal, as prolonged storage in the area potentially triggers the phenomenon, with serious consequences for air quality and public health.".
"In these torrid evenings – declared the mayor of Sant'ArpinoGiuseppe Dell'Aversana – the fires have resumed, our citizens are asking us to intervene. The mayors are the first to be called into question, but the lack of financial resources available to individual authorities, the chronic shortage of local police, and the absence of specialized equipment such as drones and jeeps, prevent us from conducting adequate monitoring to identify the culprits.
What are the remedies? Still from Aversana: "Penalties for these crimes must be doubled. Daily checks are needed at companies that process leather illegally and at farmers who use plastic for greenhouses, whose waste is often sent to illegal disposal. The Carabinieri and the army, prefects, and volunteers have been involved for years, but the phenomenon, although reduced, has not disappeared. Our experience in fighting fires over the past few years has taught us that we must reduce the problem at source by monitoring companies and farmers. An extraordinary investment of national funds is needed to establish a widespread video surveillance system to block illegal dumping at its source."

The mayor of Cesa Enzo Guida "We mayors alone will never be able to do this. A change of pace is needed regarding the Land of Fires. It would be helpful to establish a joint force, but above all, to draw on those military forces that also have judicial police powers. Using the army, without these powers, prevents the military from issuing fines, penalties, or carrying out real repression."
