Sorrento. Over 150 kilograms of ghost nets recovered, and as many other materials of various kinds fished out from the seabed, including cans, plastic bottles and fishing gear.
This is the result of the first three months of the project 'Ghost Gear & Seawatching in Sorrento', the initiative launched by the municipal administration of Sorrento, and desired by the mayor Massimo Coppola, to raise awareness among fishermen and citizens on the presence of protected animal species and promote activities for the collection of lost or abandoned fishing equipment.
These are the so-called “ghost nets”, death traps for many fish species and also a danger to the safety of divers and swimmers. “The activity has revealed, in addition to the presence of recovered waste, also a very positive note – explains Luigi Di Prisco, president of the city council of Sorrento and promoter of the initiative – It is the sighting by fishermen of numerous marine species such as turtles, dolphins and even blue sharks. A positive sign for the health of our seas. Therefore today more than yesterday it is necessary to intensify efforts in protecting the sea resource”.
