In the billboard “Summer in Naples 2021” promoted by the Department of Education, Culture and Tourism of the Municipality of Naples, the event takes place IZimbra Music Fest musical review dedicated to the world music, contamination and sharing of popular traditions and Mediterranean cultures.
Wednesday 1 September, at 21:00 pm in the courtyard of the Maschio Angioino (Piazza Municipio), Morocco meets Naples. The evening, entitled “Mediterranean Trance“, is the meeting between the “trance music” of the Gnawa of Morocco and the hypnotic and contaminated sounds of the Neapolitan ensemble PS5 -Pietro Santangelo Quintet. A musical experiment, an imaginary journey across the Mediterranean, an extraordinary fusion of genres and feelings.
The event, curated by Chiara Savelli and Marcello Squillante, aims to propose musical activities dedicated to artistic contamination, cultural exchange and interaction between musicians of different backgrounds but united by the migrant spirit that sees Naples as the center of gravity thanks to its strategic role at the center of the Mediterranean with its multiple sounds.
In addition to having always been the subject of studies by anthropologists and ethnomusicologists, the “trance music” of the Gnawa has often aroused the interest of many Western musicians, due to a rhythmic circularity that is almost impossible not to be drawn into.
Master of ceremonies is Abdenbi El Gadari, player of g'mbri (the lute-drum) and t'bel (large double-membrane drum), accompanied for the occasion by two other musician-dancers who use their voice and qaraqeb (metal castanets) to induce the state of trance.
The Neapolitan ensemble led by Pietro Santangelo (Nu Guinea, Slivovitz, Fitness for Ever) has a jazz sound with influences that draw from the Neapolitan tradition to reach sounds with Afrobeat roots, resulting in a musical experiment in which layered memories and hidden feelings resonate, as if they arose directly from the most hidden part of the unconscious, suspending the flow of consciousness.
