“The Sarno River is a national emergency, and must be treated as such.” In the next City Council, a motion to put the Sarno River issue back at the center of the national media and political agenda.

“We need to act, and everyone needs to do their part. Without instrumentalization, without passing the buck and without propaganda: local authorities, with the Municipality in the lead, and regional and national institutions.” – reads the press release written by opposition councilor Michele Grimaldi -.

“For this reason, after our interpellation to ask the Municipality to account for what has been done regarding the census and control of discharges, in the City Council of August 25th a motion of ours on the subject will also be discussed, with a precise objective: to put the issue of the Sarno river back at the center of the national media and political agenda, because it is a real issue of national character.

Faced with critical issues - the epidemiological danger, the nauseating stench, the illegal dumping, the poor controls - there are two ways: the first is to complain and place the responsibility on other levels, as the Councilor 'to everything and nothing' Arpaia does this morning; the second, which is what we propose, is a united fight by the entire City to reclaim what are our rights: that of health, that of the environment, that of a clean river.

For this reason, we need to raise our voices and raise our stakes, and first of all, the Mayor must choose to fight this battle together with our entire community: doing what is within his competence on waste disposal and controls, and at the same time representing the city in a concrete and broader claim, with disruptive and extraordinary actions, because this is a disruptive and extraordinary drama.

It has been discussed for decades, tens of millions of euros have been spent, there has been confusion between environmental issues and hydrogeological remediation, the city continues to suffer flooding on the one hand and harmful effects on health on the other: it is time to react, with facts, not words.

For this, we have proposed:

– to immediately convene the COC to evaluate all appropriate and necessary measures to combat the environmental, health and economic emergency represented by the serious level of pollution of the Sarno River;
to urgently request His Excellency the Prefect of Salerno to convene the Provincial Committee for Public Order and Safety at
in order to prepare a decisive action to prevent and combat illegal dumping in the Sarno river basin;
to ask the competent bodies to declare a state of disaster
natural area of the Municipality of Scafati, pursuant to the provisions of Legislative Decree 2 January 2018, n.1;

– to communicate with a formal letter to His Excellency the Prefect of Salerno the will of the political leadership of the Institution to issue a contingent and urgent ordinance pursuant to article 54 of the legislative decree of 18 August 2000 n. 267, to
in order to arrange for the evacuation of all civilian homes, commercial activities and production plants in the Municipality of Scafati that insist
within 500 meters of the Sarno river basin.

We need to be listened to, and we need to raise our voices.
We need responsibility and courage, and extraordinary actions in the face of an extraordinary problem. We are here.”

Michele Grimaldi, leader of the Democrats and Progressives group.
