The bishop of Acerra, Antonio Di Donna, says “no” to a new liquid special waste treatment plant in the city and asks that intervention be made on the regional territorial plan, configuring the territory from “industrial-urban” to “agricultural-urban”.
Monsignor Di Donna, who is also the president of the Episcopal Conference of Campania, has in fact hoped "that this relentlessness" against the territory will be averted, and has sent a letter to the management of "Environmental Authorizations and Waste" of the Regional Council of Campania.
He did so in view of the Service Conference convened for 30 September 2021 on the evaluation and possible approval of the request for the release of the single authorization for the construction and operation of the special waste treatment plant which provides for the disposal and storage of 50 tons per day. “Legislation should be introduced on the regional territorial plan,” asks the prelate, “which insists on configuring Acerra as an “industrial-urban” territory, while our city is rather an agricultural-urban territory. The cyclical nature with which our territory becomes attractive land for the construction of waste disposal and storage plants is disconcerting.”
According to Woman “the plan to make our territory the hub of garbage and hazardous and non-hazardous waste in the region and perhaps beyond is clear; and to make our lands, especially Acerra, a city of waste”.
“How long will we have to repeat that this territory is saturated – he adds – that it must be sealed off, that it cannot support other plants? It seems like we are witnessing a role-playing game: the company makes a request to the Region which gives its approval; the municipal administration gives a negative opinion; the environmentalists protest; the Bishop raises his voice, and everything ends according to a script already written and poor Acerra, and with it the whole territory, continues to be “the basement” of the metropolitan city. And the beauty is that everything happens “according to the law”, and in the meantime the sick person dies 'according to the law'. And this is why we intervene on the laws – concludes the prelate – our city must be configured as an agricultural-urban territory and not an industrial-urban one”.
