Agropoli. Reopen the Agropoli hospital “for our community and for all those who will need it”. This is the meaning of the touching appeal launched by Carmine Gorga, father of Tommaso, a 15-year-old who died in a car accident in Castellabate, near San Marco, on the evening of September 18. After the accident, the 15-year-old was transported by emergency services to the hospital in Vallo della Lucania, almost 50 km away. The letter was written together with his wife Giovanna a few hours after the tragic accident and the funeral of their son.
“It is impossible to describe the pain of a father, his family and his loved ones for the loss of the most precious asset: their son. Recipient of all the hopes of the family, hopes of life, of affirmations, of redemptions, but above all of life.
A family's life has been destroyed, mine. But not just mine, but all the families who have a child whose life has been uselessly cut short. It's true, no life cut short is useful, but much less that of a fifteen-year-old boy. Fifteen. With his whole life ahead of him, in the joys and sorrows that obviously every family expects, but not this. It's too much, it's unbearable, the loss of a child cannot and will never be bearable. Never.
There is only one thing that can make this pain more bearable, to ensure that it was not a useless death, that it served a purpose.
And what could it have served? To make the institutions decide to make relief more accessible, more targeted, more present.
And this is what our municipality and the surrounding municipalities lack: assistance in case of need and health care.
I don't know if the rescue had been quicker what could have changed for my son: maybe everything, or maybe nothing. The fact is that, as always, our district pays for the lack of a hospital, which also exists, but is underused when it is not at all. I am talking about the Agropoli Hospital where there is only an emergency room, despite the existence of a huge structure, whose closure has determined the existence in the area of a single hospital, that of Vallo Della Lucania.
It is not possible, it is unthinkable that our area, Cilento, so rich in visitors and so densely populated, is served only by the Vallo facility, and the consequences are there for all to see.
In the Municipality of Castellabate, the electoral campaign for the election of the new Mayor and representatives of the people has been underway for some time, those same people of Castellabate who today, not tomorrow, today, suffer the absence of the Institutions in the form of the absence of hospital facilities and health care.
And this is why I ask, on behalf of myself, my family, but above all on behalf of Tommasino, that everyone, I say all the candidates in the next elections take a step back, do not run, withdraw their candidacies until for all of us there is and is demanded, the reopening of the Agropoli Hospital for our community and for all those who will need it.
It is an act of civility that I ask, in facts, not in too many words and promises that unfortunately we are used to hearing. A better future, is what all the candidates preach or boast of preaching, start from here. Now, not tomorrow.
