Teverola. The first results of the ARPAC monitoring of the dioxins dispersed in the atmosphere during the fire that broke out last September 16th, in the early afternoon, in a production site of car components inside the Asi area of Teverola-Carinaro.

The analytical results, relating to a 24-hour sampling period between 16 and 17 September, report a concentration value of dioxins and furans (PCDD-PCDF) in sampled air equal to 2,46 pg/Nm3 I-TEQ (picograms per normal cubic meter in terms of total equivalent toxicity).

It is represented that they are not present reference limits imposed by legislation for the concentration of dioxins in ambient air; a reference value currently used by the scientific community is the one proposed by the LaenderausschussfuerImmissionsschutz (LAI – Germany), equal to 0,15 pg/Nmc. The concentration found in the sampling of 16-17 September is higher than the aforementioned reference limit.

The sampler was placed approximately 200 metres from the fire site, in a north-east direction, the prevailing direction of the smoke at the time of the Agency's intervention around 16pm on 16 September. Monitoring is still ongoing and further results, useful for monitoring the progress of the concentrations of dioxins and furans, will be released as soon as they are available.

In the area of possible fallout of the pollutants If found, soil samples (top soil) will be taken to measure any concentrations of such pollutants in the soil.

A set of additional parameters relating to air quality in the area affected by the event is available thanks to the monitoring stations of the network managed by the Agency, including those present in the municipal territories of, respectively, Teverola, Santa Maria Capua Vetere, Marcianise and Aversa. Based on the data currently processed, there are no significant critical issues in the concentrations of pollutants, clearly attributable to the fire. Also in this area the Agency is conducting further investigations, the results of which will be released as soon as they are available.
