Benevento. A 24-year-old Afghan man was arrested in Sannio by the Carabinieri for aiding illegal immigration because he allegedly pocketed thousands of euros from a fellow countrywoman who decided to flee the war in Kabul to reach her family in Australia via Italy.

Based on the military investigations, it emerged that a twenty-four-year-old Afghan woman, a guest at the SPRAR Reception Center in Paupisi, confided in an operator at the facility that she had handed over sums of money to reunite her with her brother in Australia. Investigations were started that allowed the perpetrator to be identified as a fellow countryman, also 24 years old, a guest at the same center.

The woman, who had boarded from Hamid-Karzai airport (Kabul) during the riots following the withdrawal of American troops, had asked for help from some compatriots to leave the country and reach her brother in Australia, who was also fleeing from Kabul, paying the initial sum of two thousand euros to reach Italy and subsequently being asked for another five thousand to complete the reunification operation.

The woman's desperate story found the relevant confirmations and, during the search carried out on the young man, part of the sum advanced was found as well as a photo of the victim. At the conclusion of the investigations, the Afghan citizen was arrested, by order of the magistrate on duty of the Public Prosecutor's Office of Benevento, and locked up in the prison of the Sannio capital.
