Caserta. The military personnel of the Caserta Forestry Carabinieri Station, during a service aimed at carrying out some technical investigations on wooded areas affected by forest fires, went to the hillside “Colle di Maio – Monte Cerreto” in the municipality of Caserta.
While traveling along a dirt road that climbs up an impervious and very steep area, you arrive on a terraced agricultural land used as an olive grove, located on the aforementioned hillside, and find a cultivation of Indian hemp hidden under some olive trees and spontaneous vegetation.
The agricultural land in question, in the part where the hemp plants were illegally cultivated, was found to have been milled with an agricultural vehicle (tractor), while along its perimeter, always under the olive grove, the presence of a strip of spontaneous vegetation was found which inhibited the presence of said plantation.
The location of the hemp plants ensured safe concealment from prying eyes. In fact, the area where the aforementioned Indian hemp plants were found borders upstream with a slope about 7 meters high, where above there is a thick and impenetrable bush. On one of the remaining sides, the land was bordered by a natural barrier, namely a deep valley, while on the other two there is the presence of thick spontaneous vegetation that makes the clearing not visible from a distance.
The choice to sow the illicit plantation under the olive trees also ensured further concealment from above in the event of any aerial vehicles (helicopters) flying over the area.
The aforementioned hemp plants were found to be well cared for and in a full vegetative state with the presence of multiple apical inflorescences ready to be harvested.
The soil where the hemp plants were present, near their root system, was moistened, a tangible sign that they were watered regularly.
The aforementioned soldiers immediately began operations to eradicate the illicit cultivation and seize the following items:
– n. 564 Indian hemp plants (Cannabis sativa indica) with a height varying from 100 cm to 330 cm;
– a hoe found near the hemp plants used for managing the seedlings, as well as for cleaning the weeds.
Investigations are underway to trace those responsible for the serious criminal conduct relating to the illicit cultivation of Indian hemp to obtain narcotic substances.
