One person has died near the town of Arkalochori on the Greek island of Crete, following a strong earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale that struck the area this morning.
According to the deputy mayor of Minoa Pediada, Ioannis Drakakis, the victim was a worker who was carrying out restoration work in the chapel of a church.
Another worker, the Athens daily “Kathimerini” reports, who was with the deceased person, managed to leave the religious site unharmed. In addition, the Greek authorities announced that a resident of the locality of Patsideros, who was trapped in his home, was freed by rescuers.
The Greek Civil Defense has clarified that nine people have so far been injured due to the earthquake.
