A 28 year old Neapolitan prisoner, in the high security area of the penitentiary of Frosinone, shot three of his cellmates in prison after being threatened and beaten in the past few days by some Neapolitan and Albanian inmates.

The Minister of Justice, Marta Cartabia, he asked the Dap chief, Bernard Petralia, to cancel tomorrow's commitments, to go in person to the Frosinone prison, given the gravity of what happened. This is what we learn from sources in Via Arenula. The prisoner was arrested in the evening transferred in another penitentiary institution.

The massacre was narrowly avoided. Today he asked to be able to take a shower, convincing the prison officer to open his cell. At that point, the prisoner has pulled out a gun and threatened the policeman, forcing him to hand over the keys to the rooms where the people who had attacked him were being held. The young man, brandishing the gun, approached the cells and tried in vain to open them. At that point, also seeing the alarm that had gone off in the meantime in the prison, he shot three times trying to hit the inmates. Luckily, they were not injured.

Immediately afterward, the 28-year-old called his lawyer with a cell phone, illegally in his possession. The lawyer convinced him to surrender and hand over the weapon. And so the young man did, but not before swallowing the SIM card of the microcell phone.
Commenting on the dramatic event is Pasquale Gallo, Regional Secretary of Si.NAPPe:

"This very serious news story comes on top of the daily attacks, riots and the continuing spread of crime in Italian prisons. We must put the indifference of those who should have been reforming the penitentiary system and the penitentiary police for years on end in the dock, in addition to the fact that the scandal of the lack of staff in penitentiaries continues."

“And yet new departments are opening – continues Pasquale Gallo – without thinking of increasing the number of personnel so that the prison can be made truly safe. To prevent the prison from becoming the university of the underworld, it is necessary to adopt urgent measures that do not sacrifice security, to prevent hardened criminals from having daily contact with those who have yet to be judged or with those who have committed small “occasional” crimes.

Many have “converted” to crime behind bars. The prison police should have their own autonomy and should always have a say in the committees for order and security. We have regressed to the 80s, it is time to wake up before it is too late. Prisons are volcanoes that are exploding.

Let's listen to the cry of the prison police without turning away, as if prisons were the problem of a parallel reality, otherwise we will have to deal again with gunshots in a structure that should be the bulwark of institutions and citizen safety, or with prisons set on fire by inmates full of rage. Investing in the prison police is the fundamental step to restore dignity and credibility to a system on the verge of collapse".

"Prison has become the place where organized crime affiliates settle scores by shooting. We have reached the most alarming point of a situation that we have long been denouncing, unheard, as a state of maximum emergency."

This is the comment of the general secretary of the S.PP. Aldo Di Giacomo on what happened in the prison of Frosinone where – according to the first reports released – an inmate threatened an officer with a gun and subsequently shot at other inmates in the cells.

“How it was possible to introduce not only cell phones and drugs but even a weapon into a high security section – adds Aldo Di Giacomo – it must be ascertained and in any case re-proven that the “do-goodism” towards criminals who have to serve long and heavy sentences has already caused enormous damage, first of all the delegitimization of the prison police. I hope that now citizens, public opinion, politicians realize that in prisons there are not victims or angels inmates, there are perpetrators of brutal crimes for which, instead, clemency and pardon measures have long been supported.

Opinion makers, commentators, politicians demonstrate that they have clouded minds and great confusion, not distinguishing those who carry out the delicate service of control in penitentiary institutions from those who have committed horrendous crimes, with heavy sentences, and fuel illegality. If immediate measures are not taken in the direction of the proposals presented for years, including the strengthening of resources and personnel and the activity of containing the too many episodes of violence against agents, we will go back to the dark years of detained terrorists".

“The State – concludes Di Giacomo – reaffirms his presence in the prison and especially after the solemn commitments of President Draghi and Minister Cartabia, it is time to seriously address the problems of the penitentiary system without deluding ourselves that by emptying the cells, everything will be resolved suddenly”.
