Giugliano. The windows are closed. The air conditioners are off. And the fear that what you breathe could cause damage to your health.
Giugliano, a town north of Naples, is experiencing difficult days. For the fourth night in the city center, but also in some neighboring towns, a nauseating stench of garbage has been felt that has forced the population to barricade themselves in their homes.
In the past few days, when the first episode occurred, some citizens went to the police to report the incident. In the meantime, the protest has already exploded on social media and this morning a group of citizens gathered in front of the Town Hall because they want to know where the stench that has made the air unbreathable is coming from.
For many, the responsibility lies with the Sette Cainati landfill, opened in July 2002, saturated in September 2004, years of waste emergency in Campania, currently closed.
