"Gray Manor"of Sarah Vannini is a psychological horror with a paranormal background, set in a mysterious Victorian mansion that has an unsavory reputation: built around the mid-1800s on the orders of Lord Middleton, it had become the seat of deep despair and terrible mourning when the man's wife, in the grip of a psychotic delirium, had run away with their child and they were later found dead; Lord Middleton had no choice but to hang himself.
Things didn't go any better for the subsequent owners, who bought the house in 1920: the head of the family had killed his wife and son, and then committed suicide. From that moment on, the house had been the object of superstitions, and the people who lived nearby were now convinced that it was haunted, and that the ghost of Lord Middleton still wandered among its deserted rooms.
The protagonist of the work, Francesca, a girl tormented by the abandonment of her great love, arrives at Gray Manor after being recruited to participate in a “Haunted Experience”, and to write a report on what she saw inside the haunted estate. Together with her there is another writer, Kate, and a photographer, Jack; holding the group together and conducting the experiment are the spouses Edmund and Helen Whitmore, “demonologists” by profession.
Francesca has decided to accept this crazy undertaking to escape from a life she can no longer tolerate -“The truth was that I was in Gray Manor out of sheer desperation. I cared little about the end result, whether my account lived up to expectations, or whether there were any expectations at all. I was there because I had nowhere else to go, because I would have clung to anything to keep from falling back into my own abyss.“Kate, too, has her own demons to face, and in Francesca she will find an ally and, perhaps, even someone to love.
Between disturbing visions and a traumatic past that returns, the five characters will face a terrifying journey into delirium and cruelty, accompanied by entities that insinuate themselves into the darkest part of their being and play with their psyche, feeding on their fears. It will take a lot of courage to resist, and to dominate the horror that wants to engulf them.
