Samir's Age Handanovic The Slovenian goalkeeper turned 37 in July, and his retirement isn't far off. This is why sporting director Marotta is working to find a quality replacement for Simone Inzaghi: at the top of his wish list is the Cameroonian goalkeeper, a regular starter for the Amsterdam club since 2016, where he has made 142 first-team appearances, 53 of which were in European competitions.
In February of this year, however, the turning point came: he tested positive for doping for taking furosemide, a drug prescribed to his wife. Banned for one year (which was extended to nine months after an appeal), the Cameroonian goalkeeper will return to action in November.
Talks regarding a contract renewal with Ajax, however, are not progressing: Lyon and Arsenal have already made offers, but Onana has so far rejected them. Then there's Inter's interest: the player is intrigued by the idea of playing in Italy and for the Nerazzurri, a team where he would inherit Handanovic's starting spot. Negotiations are underway: Marotta is trying to secure a significant free transfer for Inzaghi's squad.
