The global success of Elena Ferrante, after the series from The brilliant friend and the directorial debut of Maggie Gyllenhaal with the film The Lost Daughter (taken from The dark daughter), awarded in Venice for the screenplay, is about to be enriched with a new chapter: in October the filming of the series, already announced a few months ago, produced by Fandango for Netflix, which will bring the bestselling author's latest novel to the small screen: The lying life of adults.
It will be a six-part series that should debut between late 2022 and early 2023. Directing will be Edoardo De Angelis, "an author with his own directing poetics who knows the years at the centre of the story wellHe explains Tinny Andreatta, vice president of Italian original series at Netflix, in a meeting with journalists on the platform's new projects.
De Angelis has found the young interpreter for the protagonist, Giovanna, while in the role of Vittoria, the girl's aunt, there will be Valeria Golino"An original role for her, of an ambiguous woman, short, sometimes vulgar, sometimes with her own greatness. It is not clear whether she creates damage and desperation or is the guardian of what that family really is – adds the vice president of Italian original series at Netflix, also co-creator of the adaptation of My Brilliant Friend as director of Rai Fiction -. Here there is a mood far from that of My Brilliant Friend” points out.
The series, according to the official synopsis, traces the powerful and singular portrait of Giovanna's passage from childhood to adolescence in the Nineties. The search for a new face, after the happy one of childhood, oscillates between two consanguineous Naples that fear and detest each other: the Naples above, which has given itself a fine mask, and the one below, which pretends to be immoderate, trivial. Giovanna oscillates between high and low, sometimes falling, sometimes climbing, disoriented by the fact that, up or down, the city seems without an answer and without escape.
De Angelis is also co-author of the screenplay together with the team formed by Laura Paolucci and Francesco Piccolo and Elena Ferrante herself (already together for My Brilliant Friend). “He is a director with a very strong personality, he knows Naples well, he has a very fiery and carnal vision of the visual setting” adds Ilaria Castiglioni, Netflix manager for Italian original series.
The filmmaker had mentioned, a few months ago as a guest of the Giffoni Film Festival, to the series and to the appeal that Elena Ferrante has for readers all over the world: “His stories are deeply rooted in the land that originated them. An indissoluble bond that expresses itself in exquisitely universal dynamics – has explained -. How to find your own image reflected in a rusty mirror from a second-hand dealer from who knows what part of the world".
