“You’re a dead man walking and you don’t know it!” This is the message delivered to the mayor of Monteforte Irpino , Costantino Giordano, busy with the electoral campaign to be re-elected in the municipality on the outskirts of Avellino that he has led for the last five years.

Inside the envelope, also a 7,65 caliber bullet and an electoral holy card of the decapitated mayor. Giordano filed a complaint with the Carabinieri. “I don't think the threats to me and my family are political in origin –he said– the investigators will shed light on this. I will calmly continue to carry out my electoral commitments”.

The letter arrived late in the morning at the town hall of Monteforte, kept in a closed envelope where the name of the recipient, the mayor, was written on the outside Costantino GiordanoThe municipal employees brought the envelope to the mayor, who at that moment was with his deputy mayor and two councilors.

He opened it in front of them, certainly not expecting that kind of content: inside the envelope there was a bullet, an electoral holy card with his face but whose head had been cut off and then the letter. “You are a dead man walking”, the most shocking passage of the letter, in which heavy references were also made to the mayor's family. A death threat with disturbing tones, the worst signal in an electoral campaign that had already become too poisonous.

The letter is now being examined by investigators who are looking for any useful clue to try to trace the authors. It is not the first time that Giordano has received death threats: right at the beginning of his mandate, he was the recipient of two letters with similar tones to this last one.

Giordano was not intimidated and chose to go ahead, receiving the solidarity of all the institutions and also a visit from the anti-Camorra commission of the Campania Region, which arrived in Montoro where, in the same period, the former mayor was also threatened. Mario Bianchino.
