Flames since yesterday evening, in Naples, in via de Roberto.

The fire broke out around 22.00:XNUMX p.m. The Municipality reports that firefighter teams arrived immediately on site and worked all night and are still in the affected area, in addition to the State Police, Municipal Police and Arpac technicians.

“The fire is still ongoing and, at this time, there have been no reports of high concentrations of pollutants that could be related to the fire”, reads a note. The municipal administration, however, due to the presence of smoke and strong odors, advises the population to keep the windows of their homes closed and to limit exits only for essential purposes.

Arpac, the regional agency for environmental protection, reports that it intervened last midnight, in collaboration with the Prefecture, to assess the environmental effects of the fire that broke out in the evening on via de Roberto in the Poggioreale neighborhood on the outskirts of Naples. The fire involved various types of material abandoned on the roadside, including tires, car carcasses and waste of various categories.

At the time of the intervention of the Arpac technicians of the Naples department, the fire appeared to be in an advanced stage of being extinguished by the Fire Brigade. The Agency has collected useful information to promptly indicate the necessary prevention measures to be implemented immediately, including those for the correct management of the burned material.

At the same time, the technicians of the Arpac management evaluated the available weather and air quality data. The wind coming from the East-South East, of low intensity, pushed the smoke generated by the fire in the direction of via nuova Poggioreale.

The closest monitoring station is in Naples – San Giovanni Bosco Hospital, where there is an instrument for hourly measurement of nitrogen oxide (NO2) concentrations and daily measurement of PM10 concentrations. The raw data show a limited increase in the hourly value of NO2 up to 80 micrograms per cubic meter at 22.00 pm (the hourly limit set by law is 200 micrograms per cubic meter) however decreasing at 23 pm and 24 am. No other station in the regional network measured high concentrations of pollutants yesterday evening that can be correlated to the fire.

. After midnight and until today morning no anomalies are observed, even the NO24 values detected by the San Giovanni Bosco Hospital station have decreased. At night in the affected area a weak wind from the East at ground level and from the North East at altitude was detected.

This morning, technicians from the Naples department began monitoring any dioxins that may have been released into the atmosphere during the event, using a high-volume sampler positioned near the fire site. The results of the monitoring will be made known as soon as they are available.

“Another fire broke out on Friday night in the area below the bridge of the motorway junction on Via Argine. The flames burned the piled-up waste and the surrounding green area, sending up a huge column of black smoke visible for kilometres. This is yet another episode involving these infrastructures used to hide and dump illegal waste. This reckless practice not only puts citizens' health at risk due to the fumes they emit, but also because it contributes to undermining the stability of the infrastructures.

Just a month ago, a similar episode occurred on the median axis at the height of Scampia, where a fire of the same nature made the viaduct unusable for traffic, creating serious repercussions for traffic in the area. To prevent new fires, it is necessary to fence off all viaducts and similar infrastructures, making them safe to preserve their static nature and proceed with the installation of a video surveillance circuit to discourage those who continue to abandon waste in the open air”. This was stated by the councilor of Europa Verde, Francesco Emilio Borrelli.
