Napoli. Tomorrow at 10:30 at the State Archives of Naples, on the occasion of the European Heritage Days, numerous and important historical documents owned by the State will be returned by the Commander of the Unit for the Protection of Cultural Heritage (TPC) of Naples, Major Giampaolo Brasili, to the director of the State Archives of Naples, Candida Carrino, in the presence of the archive superintendent for Campania, Gabriele Capone.
These are eighty-two historical documents dating between 1798 and 1893, attributable to the Neapolitan Bourbon period and belonging to the Fund called "Carte della Regina Maria Carolina - Archivio Borbone" kept at the State Archives of Naples. Among these, the most important are the letter of 25 August 1810 from Maria Carolina D'Asburgo, Queen of Naples, to her husband Ferdinand IV of Bourbon, and the letter of October 1823 from Maria Carolina of Bourbon, Duchess of Berry, to her father Francesco, at the time Duke of Calabria, later King of the Two Sicilies (1825-1830).
The important recovery was triggered by the reporting by officials of the State Archives of Naples of the sale of one of the two documents and by the monitoring of e-commerce platforms for the sale of historical documents.
The investigative activity, coordinated by the Public Prosecutor's Office of Salerno, has allowed the seizure of a total of 115 historical documents from 18 thefts or shortages, to the detriment of State Archives and libraries throughout Italy, and a historical document linked to the Napoleonic period, dating back to the year 1798, missing from the State Archives of Paris.
The delivery – it is underlined in a note . confirms the importance of the collaboration between the Carabinieri and public and private entities, which has allowed the identification of important historical testimonies despite some documents having never been inserted in the "Database of illegally stolen cultural heritage", the largest database of stolen works of art in the world managed by the Command for the Protection of Cultural Heritage
