“Only those who love Naples will be able to administer it, only those who feel they belong to it will be able to serve it, and from now on I feel I must say a word to those whom the Neapolitan people will choose for this task of service and love.

I will be with you in all the initiatives that put the person at the center, I will fight with you all the authentic battles to affirm the just rights, I will stand by you in the defense of the institutions from every attempt of Camorra infiltration and business ambitions".

The announcement was made by Archbishop Monsignor Domenico Battaglia during the Eucharistic celebration. “The church of Naples will be at your side – he promises – but only if you commit yourself to the defense of the last and to common service. The meaning of the institutions is not the promotion of a political career but the defense of society. Naples needs the new meaning and the Neapolitan church will not shy away from doing the good that God asks of it in this time”.

“Naples is a page of the Gospel and whoever will leaf through it, guarding and administering it – warns – it will have to do so free from any desire for power and domination, wearing the apron of disinterested, loving, free service, starting from the last, the most fragile, the most marginal, invisible, to reach everyone without leaving anyone behind. Naples is a page of the Gospel, good news and can be so not only for itself but for the entire South”.

The archbishop feels he must say "a clear word to those whom the Neapolitan people will choose for this role of service and love: I will be with you in all initiatives that put the person and the common good at the center, I will fight with you all authentic battles to affirm just rights, I will stand by you in the defense of the institutions from every attempt at Camorra infiltration and from every business ambition."

And he promises: “The Church of Naples will be at your side, but only on condition that you truly and without hypocrisy work in defense of the least and in service to the common good”.

According to Monsignor Battaglia, Naples "needs a new time, and the Neapolitan Church will not shy away from doing the good that God asks of it in this time, contributing to writing together with all men and women of good will, starting with those who will be called to administer the city, new verses of the Gospel, new alphabets of service, new grammars of solidarity".

“No one has the recipe for the good of Naples in their pocket – observes the archbishop – and for this reason we are each called to give our own contribution starting from our own history and our own commitment without getting stuck in the shallow waters of useless, unproductive, self-serving conflicts”.

Finally, a reflection on the difficulties of those who have lost their jobs. “I cannot help but think of all the workers at Whirlpool – he says, reiterating the solidarity he has already expressed on other occasions to the workers at the Via Argine plant whose layoffs have been confirmed – and all the people who are suffering from lack of work”.

In the Cathedral 450 seats, 200 faithful admitted in the churchyard. No invitations, again due to Covid, and among the candidates for the next administrative elections only Antonio Bassolino was present, a regular presence for many years now.
