Napoli. On Friday 17 September at 16.30:XNUMX pm at Naples Central Station, the latest generation defibrillators will be inaugurated, which will save many lives in the event of cardiac arrest.
Cardiac arrest is one of the major causes of mortality among young people and adults in Western countries. Every year, in Italy, over 50.000 people are victims of sudden cardiac arrest; survival is still less than 10% where there are no early defibrillation systems. If you are not able to intervene as soon as possible with cardiac massage and an electric shock, death occurs.
In Campania, diseases of the circulatory system are the leading cause of death and the standardized mortality rates significantly exceed the Italian average; in Naples, more than a third of deaths (35%) are caused by problems affecting the cardio-circulatory system, which are the leading cause of death in the city. Only by intervening quickly with cardiopulmonary resuscitation and defibrillation can many lives be saved.
The only way to intervene in such a limited time is to have a strong supply of defibrillators and “lay” operators in the area who know how to use them: “Naples Central Station – says Paolo Monorchio, President of the Naples Committee of the Red Cross – with about 200.000 visitors a day and 49 million visitors a year, is the main station in Campania and Southern Italy. Spreading defibrillators means not arriving late and translates into saving people who, in the absence of immediate assistance, would not be able to survive.
This was the decisive motivation that allowed the creation of a collaborative project, unique in Italy, between Rete Ferroviaria Italiana and the Red Cross of Naples, with the support of Auxede, because cardiac arrest strikes anyone, without warning, without taking into account age, sex, race or social condition. And time is precisely the factor to defeat.
A project conceived and created to ensure real health facilities available not only to the thousands of people who use the transport services of Naples Central Station every day but also to all the employees and users of the shopping mall that has made Naples Central Station a representative railway and commercial hub of the city.
An important and tangible signal to promote the progressive diffusion and use of defibrillators in all public places. The defibrillators chosen to be installed are latest-generation devices, remotely controlled and autonomous in diagnosis. The choice to place them in totems with an exclusive design and to highlight them with clear signage, ensures easy localization”.
