Ethe barista from Naples who served coffee to presidents including Bill Clinton is retired. He was a point of reference for the category.
Giovanni Fummo, a veteran barista at the Gran Caffè Gambrinus in Naples, has died at the age of 75.
In 60 years of work at the counter, he prepared 15 thousand coffees, but already at the age of 7 he had started working in the bars of the center as a waiter. He had served coffees and shook hands with four of the presidents of the Italian Republic (Francesco Cossiga, Oscar Luigi Scalfaro, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi and Giorgio Napolitano), all with the habit of 'inaugurating' their vacation periods in Naples with a hot espresso; to this list was added Bill Clinton, the president of the United States in Naples for the G7, for whom he had prepared a special coffee.
“The Sergio and Rosati families and all the employees of Gran Caffè Gambrinus join the Fummo family in their grief, and remember the professional and moral qualities that he always transmitted with self-denial and affection throughout his career,” reads a note.
